Roof Painting & Coating Canberra

Roof painting is more than a colour change. Done properly, it's the protective skin that keeps a Canberra roof weatherproof. A good coating system seals porous tile, reflects summer heat, resists frost and moss, and takes years off the look of a tired home. Done badly, it traps moisture and peels in a season, so the prep matters as much as the paint.

Why prep beats paint every time

The number-one roof-painting failure we're called to fix in Canberra is coating applied over a dirty, damp or unsealed surface. It looks fine for a season, then peels and flakes as frost and moisture work underneath. We never skip the prep: clean back to a sound surface, repair and repoint, prime to seal, then apply the colour coats. That sequence is the difference between a finish that lasts ten-plus years and one that fails in twelve months.

What roof painting does for a Canberra home

  • Seals porous tile so it stops drinking up winter moisture
  • Reflects summer heat to keep the roof space cooler
  • Resists the moss and lichen that thrive on shaded Canberra roofs
  • Restores faded colour and lifts street appeal instantly
  • Adds genuine value when you're selling

Our coating system, coat by coat

  1. 1

    Clean & prep

The roof is cleaned back to a sound surface and all repairs done first. Coating never goes on dirty or damp.

  2. 2

    Prime & seal

A binding primer seals porous tile and gives the colour coats something to grip.

  3. 3

    First colour coat

The first protective membrane coat goes on evenly across the whole roof.

  4. 4

    Second colour coat

A second coat builds the film thickness that delivers the UV protection, and the 15-year warranty*.

Tile or metal: different prep, same care

Tile and metal both take a coating well, but they want different preparation, and that's where most jobs are won or lost. Old concrete tile needs a sealing primer to lock down its porous surface. Metal, especially older or previously-coated Colorbond, needs the right etch and primer so the new system bonds instead of peeling off in sheets a year later. Getting the prep right for the actual surface is the whole game, and it's why a coating from us lasts where a generic spray job lifts.

Roof Painting: Common Questions

Can you paint a metal roof as well as tile?

Yes. Both. Metal needs the right primer and prep to bond properly, especially on older or previously-coated Colorbond. We use the correct system for each surface.

How long does roof painting last?

A properly prepped and coated roof carries our 15-year warranty* and commonly performs well beyond it. The longevity is in the preparation as much as the paint.

Will a lighter colour keep my house cooler?

It helps, and our heat-reflective coating options do more: they reflect summer radiation out of the roof space, which makes a noticeable difference in Canberra's hot months.

My last roof paint peeled. Why?

Almost always because it went on without proper preparation. Coating over dirt, moss or damp tile fails fast. We strip back to a sound surface and rebuild the system correctly.

Can I change my roof colour completely?

Yes. The colour coats come in a full modern range, so you can shift an old red or terracotta concrete tile roof to charcoal, grey or whatever suits the house. It's one of the most dramatic, cost effective ways to update a home's look.

How long before it fades?

A properly applied system holds its colour for years and carries a 15-year warranty*. UV is the enemy in Canberra's clear-sky climate, which is exactly what the membrane coats are built to resist, far better than bare, weathered tile.

Is roof painting just cosmetic?

No. Done properly it's protective. The coating seals the surface against moisture, resists moss, and reflects heat. The colour is the visible part; the weatherproofing is the point.
