Roofing in the Inner North: original terracotta and real character
The Inner North is where Canberra started. Suburbs like Ainslie, Braddon and Reid carry homes from the 1920s to 50s, many with their original terracotta tile roofs. That changes the work: good original terracotta should be cleaned and repointed, not painted, to preserve both the character and the value of these sought-after homes. The challenges are age related (perished bedding and pointing, the odd cracked or slipped tile, and lead flashings that need attention) but the tiles themselves are often beautiful and entirely worth saving.
